Will This Be Mine?
I did wrote sometimes ago that I had been thinking of owning my first DSLR camera. There are lots of DSLR camera available and to choose the right one might be a hard decision for me to decide.
As for a newbie amateur hobbyist photographer like me, I guess I should select a good entry-level DSLR camera. I got my first advise by my friend asking me to consider of owning either a Nikon D40x or Nikon D80. He was mentioning that Nikon is a good camera for landscape while Canon would be good for taking portraits picture. From there, I started to read reviews from various sites and I put aside Nikon D40x as most of the sites aren’t giving this model an impressive review. D80 is now in my shortlisted list.
I also read about Canon Digital Rebel 400 & 300, both are the most popular camera in the flickr.com community. I get confused and lucky for me I accidentally met my long lost primary school classmate and he is now a freelance photographer based in Kuala Lumpur. I asked him about Canon and Nikon, he told me Nikon is the best. So, with this statement, I put aside both Canon Digital Rebel and sticking back to own a Nikon D80.
Last 3 weeks, I went to a camera store in Melaka just to get the idea of the pricing and I got hooked with Canon EOS 40D. The price is way much higher than Nikon D80 and I almost grab it home. I did not buy it just because the seller was advising me not to buy it as I am a newbie, so buying EOS 40D will lead me to a difficult and complicated learning process in operating and handling a DSLR. With that, I am again sticking back to Nikon D80.
Suddenly, I got this review (I can’t remember the web page) saying that D80 also is not meant for a newbie like me. It is not an entry-level DSLR, in fact it can be categories in the semi-pro category. Now, I really need to start again in looking for a right camera.
I contacted my friend again just recently and he told me that there is a good entry-level DSLR in town and he is also been thinking of owning it as one of his back-up unit. The camera is the Sony DSLR Alpha 200. After I got the recommendation from him, I read some reviews of it at various site and I think this will be a good first DSLR for me. Of course there are some negativeness points being commented, but can I say compared to D40x, Digital Rebel XTi and Digital Rebel XT, the Sony DSLR Alpha 200 is the best?
I will definately do some study again within this couple of weeks for this model and if everything goes right, I had decided to owns it latest before end of March 2008. The question now, if my first DSLR is a Sony, will I be sticking to Sony forever?

Alpha 200 is a grat value DSLR. If u can live with limited choices of Sony lens, this is the right one for u. Othrewise u might want to consider more famous brands with large selection of lenses (including a compatible lenses like Tamron, Sigma etc.) like EOS450D or D60.

Hi,
Have you got your camera?
I am in a dilemma to choose between the 450D and Alpha200.
ALpha 200 is a bargain price now but I am a little concern on the low light focusing ability

Hi ELim, yes I had already bought the A200 and I am very proud of it. Now I am looking for a couple of lenses to enhance my photo taking. You can go to my flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/dethan to see photos taken using my A200.
If you have a little bit more budget, you can go for A350 which have the capabilities of live view.
Thank you.

Well, I read your report and I agree with you. The Sony Alpha 200 is one of the best D-SLRs on the market.
But i have to mention one thing that I think is important. The noise of the cam is not as high as all people say. If you read the test (on: testberichte.de it’s on german) you will realize that all bigger sites say that the noise is not the best but it is ok.
I think the noise is very good, and I’m an owner of an Canon D40 but I don’t use this cam any more because it is too big.
Very great report.

Thanks Alpha Man. Yeah, I am having no problem with the noise of the cam and I think I will stick with Alpha. Thinking of getting A700 or any latest version of it in a year time but the Nikon D300 is bugging me also.
What model do you use Alpha Man?

Why are people going from the extreme lower end and then gradually upgrade? I go straight to D300 as a beginner and I am extremely contented with it’s performance and I need not upgrade since then. Don’t waste time and money, go for the max you can afford and stick to it. Just like car, buy a good car like a M3 and stick to it. No need to waste time.

Low light focuing is not an ability from your camera body, it’s your lens doing that job.
I have to recommand the a200 as an entry-DSLR. it’s got all the entry-level funtions you will ever need before you become a pro. and the graphic chip is in the lastest generation. (note that Nikon’s grahic unit is made by sony also, and while you are paying more money for a 6m pixel D40, you’ll get 10.2m from an a200)

forgot to mention one thing, if you are really into lens choice, sony do poorly on this compare to Cannon and Nikon, but~ I have to say but, you do get a decent range from Sigma as cheap lenses, and if you are really into it, you can always upgrade to Carl Zeiss.
No offense to the Cannon and Nikon fans, but to pay anything more than $1000 for a SLR, I’d rather choose Leica, read the reviews about Leica, and you’ll know what I’m saying.

Yes, you are right on this matter. Not many choices available as for Sony Lens but we can still use/buy any used Minolta Lenses which got quite lots of choices. In fact, now I am owning a few 3rd party lenses such (2 Minolta, 1 Sigma , 1 Tamron and a 400mm Tokina)
