Ikan Bakar Muara Sungai Duyong

Sungai Duyong

There are a few places in Melaka that you can enjoy BBQ fish or ‘ikan bakar’ such as at the famous Umbai, Anjung Batu, Alai and Muara Sungai Duyong.

Recently I went to Muara Sungai Duyong with my family and it was my first visit here for dinner. The distance of this place is quite near from Melaka Town compared to Umbai and Anjung Batu. In within 20 minutes, you will be able to reach Muara Sungai Duyong from Banda Hilir.

From 2 available restaurant to choose, we chose the one with the signage Medan Ikan Bakar Muara Sungai Duyong as per picture above.

As we walked into the restaurant, I noticed that the restaurant was full with customer. Lots of tables also already being reserved. One need to queue to select desired seafood to be cooked. Ordered 2 golden snapper, 5 crabs, 1.5kg squid, 1 ray (1kg), 20 otak – otak, 500grams of Lala snail and 500grams of Bamboo Snail. Every seafood selected, the Order Taker will asked what dish that we want them to cook and the varietiness of the menu were limited compared to Umbai and Anjung Batu, 2 places that I already used to go for BBQ fish dinner.

Dishes ordered did not take long to arrived at your table which I think is good. We had our dishes with the accompany of Nasi Lemak.

For me, I think this restaurant need to improve on 2 things :-

  1. Most of the waiters are friendly but watch out for one or two waiters that may spoil the image of the restaurant with their rudeness and unfriendly approached especially during peak hours when they need to work in a very fast pace.
  2. Add varietiness to the menu as what Umbai and Anjung Batu can offer.

In overall, my dinner here was good and I did enjoyed the food especially the Squid Fritter that I think is the best compared to Umbai and Anjung Batu. Last time I had a good Squid Fritter was in 2005 at Mersing, Johor.

As for the bill, it ended up at RM228.00 which I think is quite cheap.

Umbai, Anjung Batu and Muara Sungai Duyong, which one is the best? Personally I will choose Anjung Batu (the environment is better, varietiness of menu, fair pricing, good service, less crowd) but I will want to review this again by planning of visiting Muara Sungai Duyong for the 2nd time as I am very comfortable with the distance of this place which is nearer to my house.

If you are in Melaka and wanna enjoy Ikan Bakar, don’t only think about Umbai, you can enjoy it here even at Muara Sungai Duyong.

  1. My friends and I will be in Malacca this Chinese New Year holidays and intend to have a seafood feast. Someone told us Umbai would be the place to go for delicious seafood. Since you’re familiar with the Malacca area, is Umbai really the best place to go? Just for ambience sake, are there any restaurants next to the sea? We’ll be staying in Malacca town.

Expecting that most of the shops will be closed, are there any places worth visiting during this time?

    Your response greatly appreciated.

  2. Hiya blackcadillac73, my personal view will be like this.

At Umbai, you have lots of small stalls offering seafood but in Muara Sungai Duyong, there are only 2 restaurants. In term of the size, restaurant is bigger and better.

As for the varietiness of menu, Umbai can offer more, Muara Sungai Duyong has limited seafood and menu but dishes taste a little bit more delicious.

Environment at Umbai is kinda havoc as it is more popular among all Ikan Bakar places in Melaka especially it is a favorite spot for Singaporean visitor and due to this, the seafood here is a bit expensive compared to Muara Sungai Duyong.

So, my suggestion will be Muara Sungai Duyong for you and your friends. The location also is not far from Banda Hilir.

I can’t recall any restaurant that is really next to the sea but in Klebang, there are 2 good restaurant namely Sampan and Seafarer Restaurant that the location is not far away from seaside. Seafarer offers good Nyonya and seafood menu and also it has been visited by TV3 ‘Jalan – Jalan Cari Makan’ team.

Hope you will enjoy your visit to Melaka !!!

  3. Thanks for the info. Will definitely try to go to at least one of those places, provided we don’t get lost.

Can’t wait to taste the seafood!

  4. How do I get to Muara Sungai Duyong from Air Keroh. Planning to take my family for dinner over there.

    Thanks.

    • Thank for visiting my blog.

To get to Muara Sungai Duyong from Ayer Keroh, the easiest way is to take the road that leads to Banda Hilir. Although it is not the quickiest way but it will be much easier for people who are not very familiar with road in Melaka to reach Sungai Duyong. From Banda Hilir, drive to the Portugesse Settlement which will be on your right handside. Just keep driving straight until you had reach a small bridge, slow down and turn on your right handside signal. Just over the bridge, there will be a small junction on your right and make a right turn. You will driving along a river (which will be on your right handside) and you will find the Muara Sungai Duyong Medan Ikan Bakar at the end of the road.

      Enjoy you Ikan Bakar !!!
